SCIENCE
The Scientific MethodStudents will learn how to conduct experiments using the scientific method. The scientific method is the format students must use for their science fair projects during third quarter. We look forward to seeing the great experiments our students come up with!
Students will learn how to...
- Ask a Question
- Do Background Research
- Construct a Hypothesis
- Test the Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
- Analyze the Data and Draw a Conclusion
- Communicate the Results
The Science KitsStudents will work with the science kits provided by the district to study different areas in science.
The kits are...
- Machines
- Weather
- Plants
- The Solar System

The Science HomeworkStudents may get a simple science project to do at home during the week. This homework will be assigned on Monday and due by the following Monday. The assignment may be turned in at any time during the week before the due date. These experiments will be short and easy to do with common household items, the main point is for students to get more experience with the scientific process. When grading their experiment I'll be looking for the following things:
- All steps in the scientific method are complete.
- The use of complete sentences.
- A procedure that makes sense.
- A hypothesis that is supported by reasoning.
- All the materials that were used are listed.
- Clearly recorded data.
- A conclusion that is directly related to the results of the experiment.
The Science FairAll fourth and fifth graders are required to participate and to make individual projects. If their project wins the school competition then they will take the project on to the Tucson Community Center where many different schools have their projects on display and compete. I will be grading all of the projects and those scores will be an important factor in determining the student's science grade for the 3rd quarter.
