READING

The Textbook

Each week we read a story from the Harcort Trophies textbook. Each story has questions, vocabulary, a focus skill, and additional reading and activiteis.

Reading Workshop

After lunch each day there is a 10 minute lesson on a strategy to help with reading comprehension. The students will be asked to focus on that particular skill when they go to their assigned reading locations to read a book they have chosen for themselves. I get many of my mini-lessons from the book Strategies That Work. Students will keep a binder with their goals, reading log, IDR tasks (assignments they need to do after their silent reading), and sticky note tracker.

Strategies That Work

"Since its publication in 2000, Strategies That Work has become an indispensable resource for teachers who want to explicitly teach thinking strategies so that students become engaged, thoughtful, independent readers." The lessons focus on reading comprehension strategies such as summarizing, questioning, connecting, and making predictions. Students write their thoughts on sticky notes and place them on the pages as they read. This allows students to read more carefully and also gives me insight into their thoughts as they work. We use these strategies throughout the year, not just in reading groups, but also with the textbooks.

Reading Homework

Students must read at home for 15 minutes every night. There is also spelling homework on Monday-Thursday.
